Unity Occupational Medicine Joins WORKSAFE IOWA Associate Network

Unity HealthCare's Occupational Medicine Clinic has been accepted into the WORKSAFE IOWA Occupational Medicine Associate Network. The selection criteria used by the executive committee included strength of the existing occupational medicine services, compliance with guidelines for facility, equipment and staffing, and programming plan for occupational health and safety education. The committee also looks at the qualifications and experience of the clinic medical director, demonstrated community support, and demonstrated commitment by the system administration and board of directors for occupational medicine services.

The selection committee noted that Unity Occupational Medicine meets all the required components set by WORKSAFE IOWA. The clinic includes facilities for hearing testing, drug and alcohol testing, laboratory facilities, pulmonary function testing, and on-site x-ray.

Dr. Rhea Allen has served as the Director of Occupational Medicine since 1996. Dr. Allen has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Iowa, and worked in the industry for five years before returning to the University of Iowa to pursue her M.D. degree and residency training. She completed a Masters in Public Health in Occupational Medicine through the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2004. Dr. Allen has additional accreditation as a Medical Review Officer (MRO) and Certified Independent Medical Examiner. David Wonnell, PAC joined the Unity Occupational Medicine staff in 2004.

The WORKSAFE IOWA Occupational Medicine Associates Network is a consortium of ten hospital-based occupational health clinics in Iowa. The WORKSAFE IOWA associates make up a network of community based occupational medicine clinics across Iowa that provide occupational health and safety services locally, and in consultation with WORKSAFE IOWA staff at the University of Iowa. WORKSAFE IOWA associates have access to occupational medicine physicians in the University of Iowa College of Public Health and Carver College of Medicine, as well as industrial hygienists, ergonomics specialists, certified occupational health nurse-specialists, health educators, information specialists, and other professionals in the College of Public Health.

The Associates Network members distribute WORKSAFE IOWA's new electronic newsletter entitled "Work Safe" to their clients and contacts. As a member of the Associate Network, Unity Occupational Medicine will be able to provide access to WORKSAFE IOWA's industrial hygiene, product safety, ergonomics, and education consultation as a discounted rate to local employers.

Unity Occupational Medicine joins an elite group of occupational medicine providers from across the State of Iowa, including: Alegent Mercy Occupational Health (Council Bluffs), Allen Occupational Health (Waterloo), Iowa Methodist Occupational Health (Des Moines), St. Luke's Corporate Health Services (Cedar Rapids), St. Lukes Occupational Health Services (Sioux City), Trinity Corporate Health Services (Fort Dodge), Trinity Work Fitness (Quad Cities), Tri-State Occupational Health (Dubuque), and UI HealthWorks (North Liberty).
